What Is Diamond Overlay?
Metals and Mineral Specialists Inc. (MMSI) researches and develops the wear protection of metal castings, parts, components, equipment.
When parts are used repeatedly or for a long time they break down. This is commonly known as "wear." Wear is the general deterioration from use, specifically from friction or rubbing. Parts of metal composition will breakdown when exposed to abrasive substances that pass over their surface.
The time a metal part will last depends on two factors, the strength of the metal and the forces working on breaking it down.
Steel may be welded and can be built up with the application of tungsten carbide, to increase its strength.
The white cast iron that many parts are made from is difficult to weld. Its high chrome content causes it to crack
when heated. There has not been any successful welding or metallurgical bonding of metals to white cast iron to
increase its strength until now.
MMSI has innovated a process called diamond overlay, which will allow an industrial coating of diamond particles and metal particle matrix to be applied to white cast iron or steel surface.
Independent tests (American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM G65) demonstrate that once the overlay has been applied, one layer of the matrix increases the wear of the white cast components by 150-200%. Subsequent tests demonstrated a wear resistance of six times that of white iron alone.
Recognizing the demand for a more durable coating on wearing surfaces we invested years of research developing a unique ' diamond overlay. This overlay is specifically designed to extend the life of white iron alloys. Proven to outperform untreated white iron by as much as 6 times.
